Is there a way to use a fax machine on the same telephone line as a Comfort 1 and still retain the answerphone facility on Comfort?

Yes, you can use the Answering Machine Bypass feature. With Answering Machine Bypass enabled, you set the number of rings for Comfort to answer the call to MORE than that of the fax machine, so the fax machine answers the call first
When you want to access your Comfort from a remote telephone, you let the phone rings once and hang up. Then call again after an interval of 10 to 25 seconds. Comfort will answer the call immediately
To enable Ans Machine Bypass by user menu,
press 9 for Program Manu
Press 1 for Answering Machine
Press 0 for Answering Machine Bypass
Press 1 for ON
To enable using Comfigurator, go Configuration > Modules and Settimgs and check the Answering Machine Bypass box. Do a download to comfort
If you have a normal as well as fax line. it is recommended that you use the normal telephone line for Comfort, not the fax line, since that will allow callers to leave messages on the Answering machine.

Indeed - I got that far from the documentation.
But if the fax answers first - how can somebody leave a message on the answerphone.

If the fax answers first, or if the call is answered by anybody, it will not be possible for the caller to leave a message
The purpose of the Answering Machine bypass function is to allow the user to access Comfort when there is a fax or external answering machine on the line
If you have a fax and you want to use the Comfort answering machine they cannot be on the same line, unless you tell your callers how to bypass the answering machine, ie let the phone ring once and call back again
