You would have to connect a UCM06 directly to the PC to upgrade it. The reason is that each module can only support 1 type of upgrade not both types.
I dont think it is such a major problem to upgrade that way, compared to the programming cable

I must admit, being slightly \"outside\" this discussion but it not being 100% clear what your are both saying exactly.
We are not taking about KNX, Zwave, GSM, CBUS, Velbus, Universal ucms etc.....
.... you mean having more than one base UCM with a comms daugthercard on; one of serial, ethernet or USB?
So say I have 1 x UCM/Eth and 1 x UCM/USB in my comfort setup, are you saying I cant upgrade say the USB one using bus upgrade from my UCM/Eth which is connected to the PC, I\'d have to instead connect the UCM/USB directly to the PC as well?
I don\'t have that setup by the way but just trying to be clear in my mind on the scenario you guys are talking about.
If that is the case I\'d say it only really becomes an issue if you dont have a laptop to position next to your comfort system to physically connect things; then I guess you are back to programming cable and taking the cover off etc and upgrading via UCM/Eth.

correct, any UCM which is USB, RS232 or Ethernet must be upgraded by direct connection, it cannot be through another UCM

Hi Palmlodge, I think I know what caused the exception
According to the screenshot, the Bus Upgrade dialog found a UNiversal UCM 6.003 that could be upgraded.
However the next screen shot shows the error message
\"Firmware for UCM Type 10 version 6.008\" will be upgraded.
This means you may have selected the UCM6.008.cbf file to try to upgrade to the Universal UCM! This wil be rejected and is not allowed. You can only upgrade the same type of firmware to a module, ie UCM06 to UCM06, GSM to GSM, Zwave to Zwave etc. This has always been the case even with the programming cable
It should not have caused an exception, the correct message is \"Bus Firmware Upgrade not supported for this module\"
Why not try using the Universal UCM 6.004 from https://www.cytech.biz/universal_ucm_firmware.html to upgrade the Universal UCM over the bus
And use UCM6.008 to upgrade your UCM #1 which is directly connected using the Direct Connection method?

What - so if we have a UCMETH address ID greater than 1 - ie. not the default used for upload/access and not connected (directly) to a PC then we still cannot upgrade using the comfort bus!!
Surely this statement cannot be true!

If you have a UCM/Ethernet at UCM ID 2, are you not able to connect to it using an IP address and port
If you have a UCM/USB at UCM ID 3, can you not connect your PC to that using USB?
If you have a UCM/232 at UCM ID 4 can you not connect your PC to that port?
I did not think that it would be any problem at all

UCMno01 - I use as the access point (when we go to site this could be UCMETH or UCMRS232 or UCMUSB. This would be the latest version anyway. so forget this....)
UCMno02 - CBUS v5.235
UCMno03 - Ethernet v6.XX
UCMno04 - UCM05 RS232v 5.XX
UCMno05 - KNX v5.218
UCMno06 - UCM06 with plug in ethernet board v6.XX
Which of the above am i able to upgrade using the Comfort bus function?

I am afraid I have difficulty understanding the confusion, or I am confused about your confusion
UCM/232, Ethernet and Rs232 with version 6.xxx can be upgraded by direct connection. If the UCM is 5.xxx then upgrade it to 6.xxx using the programming cable
These UCMs do not need to be ID 1, you just need to connect the PC to them
Comfort 6.xxx can be upgraded byComfort Bus. To test this do an upgrade with the same firmware ie ULT 6.005, the firmware will not change since it is the same version but you can see the procress go through
UCM and KNX version 6 has not been released. Once they are you do an upgrade to their respective version 6.xxx using the prigramming cable and then from then on you can upgrade them by Comfort Bus
UCM/Universal would also be upgradable by Comfort bus as it is an \"external\" UCM, ie it does not connect to the PC, but to other equipment
Remember that you can upgrade only to the firmware of the same type, ie Comfort ULT to ULT, KNX to KNX, GSM to GSM
Also the UCMs 232, ethernet and USB are all the same type with the same firmware. Only the interface is different, but they work the same so all can use UCM6_008.cbf
