Could we have automated or manual assignment of ID's from software.
This could then extend to auto recognition of any comfort associated hardware (that may be is not currently assigned?)

That is already implemented in 3.6.1 as long as the Comfort and modules all are v7 firmware
|

Excellent
So if i were to add (say) an old comfort keypad to an v7 system nothing would happen..... If i were to add a new v7 keypad to a system then it would be automatically recognised and re-assigned the next available keypad slot!

No, it is not that simple
You can change IDs using drag and drop from one position to another
OR
if the ID is Unassigned, then you can start an Auto-ID assignment mode and press the ID button on the new module that you want to assign a new ID.
Or you can press and hold the Copy/ID button on the UCM to increment cycle the ID
The KP06 already has a menu setting for changing iDs
