I have went through the details of doing a dial test and all works OK with the home phone but as I have a GSM module installed can i force all faults and tests to use this first? Even if I can for a dial test via GSM to ensure the simm is working as it should.

You can use the Dial test to dial to all phones and send SMS
If you want to test dialing by GSM you need to disconnect the phone line which will force Comfort to use GSM as a backup

I have left the home phone off hook but all the dial test does is wait until the line is free again, it does not go to the GSM at all. Are you saying to disconnect from the Comfort control panel. Is there no where to tell the systems to use the GSM all the time.

You have to disconnect the phone line, not take the phone off hook
If the phone is off hook and there is an intruder alarm, Comfort will cut off the phones and take over the phone line to make the call. However for Dial test which is just a test, it will not interrupt any phone call which is going on
There is no way to force the GSM dial out unless you disconnect the phone line
The GSM function is to act as a backup dialer to the phone line.
