I have 1 SCS in the system. I am successfully announcing the temperature in the home control menu using sensor 8. When I try to use Comfigurator to "Get Value, Sensor register 8" in order to copy to a counter, I get an error that sensor 8 is invalid.

The new version of Comfigurator will fix that. It is now in Beta as 2.9.4, see the link in http://www.comfortforums.com/forum20/1088.html
It will be released as 3.0. It has a new and more useful user interface with many new features
I have checked that the error you encountered does not occur in the new version
You can convert your ccl file to the new format cclx (based on xml, so it will be easier for other applications to make use of it)

Thanks that works nicely. However if I want to set a sensor feedback in Home control it does not allow me to select a particular sensor. Is this because I only have one SCS in the system and it automatically assumes it is Sensor no 8?
Secondly when I try to display the temperature in degrees C I find that the CWM applet designer will not let me set non integer steps in the value list as is shown in the CWM manual. Will I have to edit the HTML?
Thanks

This is a bug in the sensor feedback feature in the Control Menu in the beta Comfigurator version. Thanks for discovering it. We will get it fixed in the next release
We will investigate the matter with the CWM designer
