We have been asked by several dealers to have our keypads KP03. KP04 in white to match the colour of wall switches. We plan to produce another colour option
Also there was a suggestion that the colour on the original design concept (silver metallic) looks better, see picture. Anybody have comments on this?

Great Idea, I think I would sell allot more silver then the cream colour!

The keypad is the only part of the system that the customer see's, It has to look good!
Maybe even a funky glass plate style (ie Clipsal Saturnish), or something with the finish quality of a new Ipod. (chrome/Black, Chrome/white).... Just an idea.   Cheers

Keep the ideas coming ....

I'm chasing a couple of people who were going to get laser cut metal plate samples for the keypad.

I'm pushing to get these up at the UK Show in Sept.  As soon as there are any photos I will publish here.

Just to point out (as I expect you know) it is possible to recess them if you are very accurate with the cutout at the corners.

Nigel

Here is a photo of a proposed new colour for the keypads, in metallic silver
We have not decided yet on the colour so let us know what you think
There may be other colours to be tested

Hi Chiu,

I think the white colour option will be much more accepted than the current cream.

For my own personal opinion the silver metallic look would not be as popular as it would really stand out ( not is a good way) against a white wall,  and most walls are white.

The option to have a flush mounted version I think would also be very popular.

How about this for an idea.

Perhaps the PCB could be mounted into a plain box for protection from dust etc.  The box would have some arrangement to secure it to the hole in the plaster wall, or for suface mounting.  It must allow it to be removed as well.  Thus the engineering costs for the PCB mounting box which is generic across all styles of keypads,  current and future, could be amortised.   Attached to the plain box is a fascia plate with the holes for the keys, LED's and LCD for the KP04 version.  The plate attaches to the front of the plain box in a generic way.  Thus the material, colour and style of the fascia can provide more options in a less expensive way.   Dynalite do this very well with their new switches.  Even the frosted glass option like the Clipsal saturn switch would be possible.   For people who want the custom look they can have a plate laser cut locally from stainless steel or brass or acrylic.  The plate must be able to be mounted to plain box is simple way.   If you could supply the x,y coordinates of the holes in the plate,  local distributors,  or even dealers could get a facia plate laser cut to meet the customers/ architects desire to match anything they wish, provided they pay for laer cutting of the plate.

This option could even apply to the door station as well. It could allow for a flush mount or even surface mount.  The PCB is in a plain box, to provide protection from dust and rain.  Two facias could be avialable.  One the allows flush mounted to brick and concrete walls etc.  The other allows surface mounting.  The facia cover would cover the front of the door station ( plan generic box)  and wrap around the sides, top and botton and butt against what ever it is surface mounted to.   This may give  better protection for water entry then the current two part case.   If the door station is out in the weather, then the ( Belt and Braces ) installer could run a bit of silicon  around the edge of the cover plate for complete protection.  This would still allow it to be removed, by cutting the silicon seal.

General principal, is to have the PCB, speaker mic etc, mounted into a generic plain jane box, that is the same for keypad, and door stations.  The box provides the method to surface or recess mount for both door station and keypad.   The facia for both the door station and keypad attach to the plain box in a standard way that is simple as to allow anyone to get a laser cutting shop to cut a facia out of what ever they like and attach it to the plain jane PCB support box.

You will probably have to change the orientation of volume contol to allow it to be accessed from the front,  not the side.

Please make sure that that fascia has a minimum 10mm overlap of the hole cut for the box that holds the PCB.

I know that you have tried hard to improve the keypad design and style to meet peoples whiches, and we thank you for this.  However this is an impossible task as no matter what you do, you cannot please them all.    There is nothing that is better than Comfort when it comes to  functionality and value for money, but this is not taken into consideration as somtimes we do not get to first base if we are blocked on the look of the keypads by architects and other customer influencers.   I think this is very important when it comes to appartment blocks built by developers, where their are several sales involved.

What do you and others think of this idea.

As always I would like to complitment Cytech on their responsiveness to requests from customers and dealers, and their ability to keep improving the product.

Regards  Ian Clarke

Thanks for the suggestion, Ian

We are going to make available the keypads in plain white as an alternatuve colour choice

We may also do a smaller quantiity in metallic silver finish for special requiremements. It may not always be necessary to match the colour of the wall, eg the Clipsal Neo and Ulti switches and most EIB are in various colours which do not match the colour of any wall. The purpose is to offre more options to the user

The option of a wall mounted box is interesting and has been discussed, and may be implemented later, but it presents more engineering challenges, lime the volume control, size  of the faceplates etc and probably will still be criticised

regards

I too, love the idea of flush mounting or the option to do either.

Done right the front panel could become simpler too in that it ony needs to be flat without any profile. This means that it may well be possible to get a local company to laser cut any material of our choice! This could then be held in place by magnets or clips of some kind.

As you say, the volume control will be the problem. I like the idea of a popup knob. Press once to, for the knob to pop out and allow adjustment. Press again to stop fiddling. Done like this it is just another round hole in the front panel. And while you are at it please make sure the volume control does not go to low. I have had a couple of clients that have knocked the knob and turned the volume right down resulting in calls to me.
