Ok, I'll start again from first principles tonight with all of your info above.
Comfort is definitely still working. Without the UCM connected I can login through keypad and get Security Off message and voice menus, etc. Would it work at all if it's firmware was part corrupted?
And yes, UCM is working to a certain extent as it did previously respond as you mentioned above, and when I first tried to upgrade Comfort it was saying "UCM does not support this operation", which also implied it was talking to it.
Hopefully I'll get it cracked tonight or at least be able to definitely list you what happens in the various scenarios then you can suggest what my options are.
One dumb question - I didn't have to make any changes to Comfort config did I to tell it there is now a UCM connected? I assumed that it would have worked that out itself?
Also, I'm on Windows 10 - I assume there are no known issues with Comfigurator running on Win10? Windows Firewall wouldn't interfere with it or anything like that? It does have an 'Allow' rule for CS Manager as it asked me if I wanted to Unblock that when it first ran.

In the old Comfort firmware that you have it is possible to set the number of UCMs =0, which means UCM cannot be polled so it will not reply
You can check and correct this by going to Engineer Menu via keypad, ie Press F0, 6789#
Keypad will say "Welcome Engineer Menu... etc
Press 7,4,1 for Locations
"Enter Location and # Key"
enter 1672#
This is the number of UCMs. The default valuie should be 1
If it is 0, enter 1#
This sets the no of UCMs to 1
Reset Comfort and the UCM D9 should start blinking meaning it is polled and is replying to polls
If UCM is still not replying that means the UCM feirmawre may be corrupted and needs to be upgraded

Thanks. The Comfort system is pretty much out of the box other than testing a couple of zones so if UCMs=1 is the default value then I doubt I'd have changed that. But it was 6 years when I originally bench tested it so you never know. I'll also verify that later tonight too.

Well, I now have everything working. The issues was the UCMs=0 setting in location 1672. Looking at my old Engineer manual it did advise to set the number of UCMs, SEPs, Keypads, etc, so maybe I did set that to 0 as part of my original testing 6 years ago.
In a nutshell, after setting number of UCMs to 1 everything went well. The only difference from your instructions was that I DID have to do a Scan for Modules to get the UCM to be initially recognised (with a few Module Scan Timeout messages). After that it was pretty good and I went through and upgraded the UCM to 7.098 (from 7.076) and then main board to 7.116 via the programming cable. Oddly the UCM upgrade finished at 87% but without any error messages so I did it again and got the same. I risked a Scan Modules and it showed it had worked definitely worked anyway. The main Comfort upgrade did run to 100% - it didn't say "Success" but it gave no error messages. I looked up UB03 and discovered that was positive and after a power off, de-connect and re-start all was well.
The only remaining quirk now is that after retrieving System Info in Comfigurator it shows my Comfort serial number as "invalid" - is that normal?
Thanks very much for all your help anyway!

Serial Numbers were not implemented in the older Comfort so it will show invalid
I am glag that you sorted it out
I hope you dont leave it for another 6 years
